Couples Therapy in Los Angeles
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples navigating disconnection, conflict, and the wounds that get in the way of closeness. Available in West LA and throughout California via telehealth.
Every Couple Gets Stuck. EFT Helps You Find Your Way Back.
Conflict, distance, and disconnection don't mean your relationship is broken. They mean you and your partner have gotten caught in a cycle that's hard to escape on your own. The same argument keeps happening. One of you pursues; the other withdraws. Or you both shut down. Underneath the pattern, there's usually a deeper longing: to feel safe, seen, and truly close to the person you love.
At Sol Shine Wellness Group, we offer Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): the most extensively researched couples therapy approach available, with decades of evidence supporting its effectiveness. EFT helps couples identify and shift the negative cycles that drive disconnection, and build a more secure, responsive bond.
We Work With Couples Facing
Recurring Conflict
The same arguments cycling endlessly about communication, intimacy, parenting, finances, or anything else without resolution or repair.
Emotional Distance
Feeling like roommates rather than partners. Disconnection that has grown gradually over time, leaving both people lonely within the relationship.
Betrayal & Trust Repair
Recovering from infidelity, broken trust, or significant betrayal, including the emotional aftermath and the slow work of rebuilding safety and connection.
Intimacy & Vulnerability
Difficulty with emotional or physical intimacy, including fear of vulnerability, shutdown, or feeling unable to reach your partner when it matters most.
Life Transitions
Relationship strain during major transitions: becoming parents, career changes, loss, illness, relocation, or the shifting demands of different life stages.
Attachment Injuries
Moments when one partner needed the other and felt abandoned, dismissed, or let down; events that left a lasting wound in the relationship.
Couples Affected by Eating Disorders or OCD
When one or both partners are navigating an eating disorder, OCD, anxiety, or trauma, the relationship is affected too. We offer integrated support for couples in these circumstances.
Pre-Marital & Relationship Strengthening
Couples who are not in crisis but want to build stronger communication, deepen understanding, and prepare for the road ahead.
The Evidence-Based Approach to Lasting Connection
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
EFT was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and is grounded in attachment theory: the science of how humans form and maintain close emotional bonds. It is the most researched couples therapy model in the world, with over 30 years of clinical trials showing that 70–75% of couples move from distress to recovery, and approximately 90% show significant improvement.
EFT works by helping couples identify the negative interaction cycles that drive disconnection: the pursue-withdraw, attack-defend, or mutual shutdown patterns that feel impossible to escape. Rather than focusing on communication techniques or conflict resolution skills, EFT goes deeper: it helps each partner access and express the underlying emotions and attachment needs that are driving the cycle, so the other person can actually hear and respond to them.
The result is not just fewer arguments. It's a fundamentally more secure bond, where both partners feel safe enough to be vulnerable, and responsive enough to be a safe haven for each other.
The Three Stages of EFT
Stage 1 — De-escalation
You and your therapist identify the negative cycle driving your conflict and disconnection. Both partners begin to see the pattern, not each other, as the problem, which reduces blame and defensiveness.
Stage 2 — Restructuring the Bond
Each partner begins to access and share the deeper emotions and attachment needs beneath the surface reactions. New, more vulnerable conversations become possible, and the bond begins to shift.
Stage 3 — Consolidation
New patterns of connection are strengthened and generalized. Couples develop a shared narrative of their relationship and the changes they've made, and build confidence in their ability to navigate future challenges.
Our Approach to Couples Work
EFT is our primary framework for couples therapy, but we draw on additional approaches when clinically indicated, including trauma-informed work when one or both partners carry histories that are showing up in the relationship.
EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy)
The gold-standard attachment-based approach for couples, targeting the negative cycles that drive disconnection.
Trauma-Informed Couples Work
Integrating individual trauma history into couples therapy when past wounds are affecting present connection.
Attachment-Based Interventions
Deepening understanding of each partner's attachment style and how it shapes their needs and responses in the relationship.
Gottman-Informed Techniques
Research-based communication and repair skills drawn from Gottman Method research, used alongside EFT as appropriate.
Somatic Awareness
Body-based awareness to help partners recognize and regulate emotional activation during difficult conversations.
